The Santa Fe Concert Association believes that excellent performers are developed through consistent performing under concert conditions. The EPIK Artist Program supports this conviction through coachings with Joseph Illick and Gina Browning, and regular monthly performances, at no admission charge, in a number of public venues in Santa Fe. Artists also receive preparation for auditions and competitions.

This program places an advanced EPIK Artist within the SFCA orchestra, seated with a mentor, for rehearsals and performances of the annual Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve concerts. |
|
This program supports the existing orchestra, band, and choral programs in the Santa Fe Public Schools, the New Mexico School for the Arts, and the Santa Fe Youth Symphony. The program pays professional, community-based musicians to provide student musicians and ensembles with in-school group lessons and coaching throughout the school year. Public performance opportunities are also provided. For example, in March 2011, more than 200 Santa Fe Public Schools choral students performed at the Lensic. |
This annual program of free professional opera productions, geared to families, began in January 2010 with Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors. The three performances, two at the Scottish Rite Center and one at the South Side Library, played to packed houses of children, families, and seniors.
The January 2011 opera, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, played three performances at Scottish Rite Center, again to full houses. In addition, four performances were given for 1,200 Santa Fe Public Schools elementary school students, through the PASS Program.
The 2012 opera will be an adaption of Mozart's The Magic Flute, sung in English. |
|
Inaugurated in 2011, The Gingerbread Project runs in conjunction with each year's free opera. Children who will attend the opera through PASS are invited to create a visual art project that relates to the opera. The sculptures are displayed during both public and school performances of the opera, documented in photos, then returned to the artists.
In addition, through Bringing Music to Life, SFCA provides lesson materials or a learning book in advance to the students who will see each year's opera, and their teachers. This helps them to a fuller understanding of the opera and its story prior to the production. |
Through the BRAVO KIDS! program, SFCA visiting artists offer interactive concerts in such venues as St. Francis Auditorium of the New Mexico Museum of Art, The Lensic Performing Arts Center, or in schools. During these events, the artists perform, and speak to the students informally about their creative life.
Each event is geared to the particular ages and artistic experience of the students. For example, in October 2010, the Spanish Brass Quintet from Valencia, Spain, gave a free community concert in Santa Fe's Cathedral Basilica as well as providing interactive concerts at Santa Fe High School (band and Spanish students), Atalaya Elementary (special education students), New Mexico School for the Arts (general student population), and Eldorado Community School (band students). In April 2011, saxophonist Ashu and pianist Kuang-Hao Huang presented master classes and recitals at New Mexico School for the Arts and Santa Fe High School.
| PARTNERS & OTHER OUTREACH |
SFCA works with other local arts education programs and groups on collaborative projects, including Santa Fe Public Schools and New Mexico School for the Arts, and collaborates with other organizations as Community Partners. The 2011-12 Partners are Santa Fe Children's Museum, New Mexico School for the Arts and Santa Fe Youth Symphony.
SUPPORT THE SANTA FE CONCERT ASSOCIATION NOW!
Under the guidance of Director of Education Gina Browning, the Santa Fe Concert Association is committed to outreach and education on every level. Student concerts by artists, free family programs, and informative lecture-recitals by our artistic director, Joseph Illick, help make the artistic experience more meaningful and immediate for all. Generous support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government sources makes these programs possible!
Now in its third year, the EPIK Artist Studio has expanded to include three different programs - for EPIK Artists, Studio Artists, and Graduate Artists. The EPIK Artists are talented young musicians and dancers aged 9 to 17, chosen by audition, who receive private coaching and regular performance opportunities. The Studio Artists, who are singers, are also selected through auditions and perform in the annual SFCA free Community Opera and in several holiday concerts. The Graduate Program provides special performance opportunities, audition workshops, and ongoing coaching for performers who have completed two years in the EPIK Artist Studio.
For 2011-12, performance venues include the First Presbyterian Church, El Castillo, Ponce de Leon Retirement Community, Collected Works Bookstore, First National Bank downtown, Christmas at the Palace, the Santa Fe Children's Museum and the United Church of Santa Fe.
