WE ARE OPERA

7 p.m. Friday, January 6; 2 pm Sunday, January 8;
Free community opera, Mozart's Magic Flute
Scottish Rite Center

The Magic Flute typically lasts two and a half hours. This production, which is in English, lasts about an hour and five minutes. The length of our version makes for a wonderful family opera. Note that these performances are open to everyone: adults on their own, families, and children. The Santa Fe Concert Association is pleased to offer these free performances as part of our program to give back to the community. We thank our corporate sponsors and donors who make these performances possible.

The Magic Flute is Mozart's final operatic masterpiece, which combines humor and high ideals. Prince Tamino strives for wisdom and truth, while his friend Papageno is just looking for a good meal and a girlfriend. The humanity of the characters combined with some of Mozart's most sublime music has made The Magic Flute on of the most beloved operas of all time.

The cast is made up of young professional opera singers from around the country who have sung at leading opera houses and in major opera festivals, including Santa Fe Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels, New York City Opera, Portland Opera, and Toledo Opera. There are also eleven Santa Fe children in the production who are members of the EPIK Artists program, playing the roles of the spirits and the chorus.

There will be a small chamber orchestra of seven players accompanying all the performances. Joseph Illick, Artistic and Executive Director of the Santa Fe Concert Association, will be the conductor. Costumes are being created specially for the production by Anne De May of Costumes! Santa Fe.

Free performance, and no tickets required.

True Love Gone Hopelessly Wrong!!!
4:00pm, January 28, 2012, Tristan and Isolde
United Church of Santa Fe

General Admission Price: $25.00

The Santa Fe Concert Association and The Wagner Society of Santa Fe present an intimate look at Tristan and Isolde featuring Joseph Illick and soprano Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet

Tristan and Isolde is Richard Wagner's retelling of the epic medieval love story of passion and betrayal. Sir Tristan is a knight who serves King Mark of Cornwall. Isolde, an Irish princess, is to be married against her will to King Mark. Tristan is in charge of transporting her by ship from Ireland to Cornwall. Isolde's mother, a powerful sorceress, has sent two magic potions with Isolde on the journey. The first is a love potion that Isolde is supposed to drink when she is with King Mark so that she will be happy in her marriage with him. The second is a death potion in case the first potion doesn't work.

Joseph Illick will tell the story of Tristan and Isolde, play some of the most rapturous, sensual, transcendent love music ever written, and talk about the life and music of Wagner. Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet has sung leading soprano roles all over the world. She has appeared on the stages of Barcelona, Paris, Madrid, Frankfurt, Bordeaux, Berlin, Venice, Bregenz, Florence, Geneva, Naples, Oslo, Strasbourg, Cologne, Nantes, Marseilles, Toulouse, Santiago, and Dallas.

Come & find out what Isolde will choose to do!
